Spring 2019 Favorites

Hello everyone!

Ahhh Spring, finally! We’re still having pretty cold days around here but the snow is gone! Related, flood season is upon us, even worse than last year’s… Do you guys have significant flooding where you live?

To get my mind off things, I selected a few of my current favorite things! There’s a bit of everything so I’ll go ahead and divide them into categories, let’s start!

Spring 2019 favorites

Books

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

Spring 2019 favorites Book 2

Wizards! Magic! Love! Teenage Angst! This book is everything. You follow Simon Snow (The Mage’s Heir) through his last year at the Watford School for Magicks.

Sound familiar? Yeah, it was originally a fictional world inspired by Harry Potter used in another one of Rainbow Rowell’s books ‘Fangirl’.

Anyway, it is better to read ‘Fangirl’ first, but not necessary.

The sequel ‘Wayward Son’ is scheduled to come out in September 2019 and I can’t wait!

When life gives you demons by Jennifer Honeybourne

Spring 2019 favorites Book 1

Cute, funny and campy. Reminds me a bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in that way.

Shelby has been training to be an Exorcist, not super common for a high school girl! We follow her in her training and on the job, as well as in her daily school life.

Pretty cool story and a very fast read!

Beauty

Etude House Lip Tints

Spring 2019 favorites Lip tints

First of all, these are beyond cute! They look like popsicles!

Beyond the packaging, the formula is very nice, it leaves a sheer color on the lips that looks almost natural, just better.

You can layer them quite easily and they work great to make that gradient lip that is so popular around Asia.

Pretty cheap too, I got mine on Beautynetkorea and I paid less than $5 a piece.

Body Shop Skin Sponge

Spring 2019 favorites loofah

Sure is a loofah.

But that is the best damn loofah I ever had. Plus, exfoliating with this bad boy first got me the smoothest leg shave ever, that’s enough for me to buy a dozen.

The cherry on top on the sundae, however, is that this little exfoliating wonder is made out of recycled milk cartons. What? Yup! Recycling at it’s very best.

I’m apparently way late on this particular bandwagon too as they seem to have been making those for quite a while. Oh well, better late than never!

Fragrance

Atelier Cologne Stories

Spring 2019 favorites Fragrance

Atelier Cologne is my absolute favorite brand of perfume.

This little package is super neat because you get to try a lot of scents for a much smaller price ($25 at Sephora, just in case you want to check it out)

My personal favorite from this particular set is ‘Orange Sanguine’, my all time favorite from the brand is ‘Figuier Ardent’, but all the scents are so nice!

Bath and Body Works Aromatherapy Candle

Spring 2019 favorites Candle

Eucalyptus & Spearmint, not sure if this relieves my stress whatsoever but it smells so very nice.

Fresh but not too much like citrus can sometimes be, you know? No? Just me then…

Major plus too, it’s strong enough to cover the wet dog smell in my house so there’s that.

TV SHOWS

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina part 1 & 2

Spring 2019 favorites TV show 2

Sabrina the teenage witch got a makeover, and it’s dark.

It’s also feminist, inclusive AF, a little spooky and all around awesome! Do yourself a favor and watch it on Netflix. It has about 20 episodes so it’s not a huge commitment.

For those of you unfamiliar with the original, Sabrina is a half-witch, half-mortal. On her 16th birthday, she has to choose which world she’ll be a part of forever. Quite the decision… or is it?

That being said, I think that this is a show that will become cult, like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ or ‘Charmed’.

Go check it out, Praise Satan!

Nightmare High

Spring 2019 favorites TV show 1

Yes, it is a Korean TV Show.

BUT, not only is it on Netflix, but it’s only 12 episodes of 15 minutes. You can handle subtitles for 3h I’m sure.

The episodes are so short but the storyline is still super convoluted and compelling. A new homeroom teacher shows up, but somehow, he seems to know an awful lot about the student’s personal lives… There’s also this contract business that has to be signed with blood…

Absolutely check it out, it’s amazing!

Food

I’ve been craving noodles and spicy food in general, which is not great for my diet…

I had Jjajangmyeon a few times (even got my picky friend Kim to try it and she loved it) It’s just so savory and just comfort food enough for those dark rainy spring days.

You can check out my post about it HERE

Fork & Fantasy - Jjajangmyeon 2

I have also been going out to eat far too often…

My current favorites are Subway (yeah, I know…) and any kind of pizza.

Actually, I’m thinking of having an entire post dedicated to my search for the perfect frozen pizza… Is that a good idea? I mean, it’s probably going to happen either way but, would you like it?

That’s it for today guys, hope you enjoyed these favorites of mine and do let me know in the comments if there’s new stuff I should try. Some favorite of yours maybe?

Until next time,

Andreanne

Korean Dramas. What? How?

Hello everyone!

So sorry for missing last week’s post, I was away all week for a conference and didn’t bring my laptop… because I’m a genius who wanted to travel for a full week with only a carry on bag… Never again!

For this week, I thought I’d talk to you guys about Korean Dramas. What are those? They are South Korean TV series. When I say series, I mean that there’s a lot of different ones, because most of them are only one season long, which I love and hate at the same time!

25

So, what’s great about Korean Dramas, well, as I mentioned before, they are almost always 1 season. Which means that you don’t need to wait 6 seasons to know how it’ll end. I like that. On the other hand, sometimes you’re not ready to say goodbye to the characters yet (no? just me?)  The episodes are slightly longer than what we are typically used to in the west, usually between 60 and 85 minutes.

You could compare them to telenovelas, they have ALL the drama… and the fighting… and the romance… and the supernatural… They have everything. Obviously, there are sub-genres, not everything is 100% drama all the time. There’s comedies, supernatural/horror, romance, etc.

The picture above shows some of my personal favorites,

My love from another star (2013-2014)

Starring Kim Soo Hyun and Gianna Jun, this drama is about an Alien that arrived on Earth 400 years ago, Do Min Joon. He lived through a lot but nothing could prepare him for what would happen after Cheon Song Yi, a huge Hallyu star moved next to him.

It’s hilarious, it’ll make you cry, it’s just a masterpiece. Fun Fact: the lipstick used by Gianna Jun in the Drama was so popular after she was seen using it that it caused a worldwide shortage, it was the YSL #42.

Descendants of the Sun (2016)

Starring Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo, this drama follows a unit of Special Forces, as well as the Doctors of a hospital. It has been one of the most popular dramas of the last few years and with good reason! The storyline is veryyy compelling and the characters are very multidimensional.

Fun fact: DotS received quite the backlash for featuring too many product placements. It was explained, however, that those were needed financially since the drama was unusually filmed in its entirety before the release. Korean Dramas are usually filmed on a weekly-ish basis.

Age of Youth/ Hello my Twenties (2016)

Age_of_Youth-JTBC

This drama follows the stories of 5 girls living in the same share-house in Seoul. Each of them has a different story, different struggles and a different opinion on the other girls. This a somewhat light-hearted drama that I love to re-watch often, if only as a background while I do other stuff.

Fun Fact: This is one of the few dramas that got a season 2. After the launch on Netflix, people liked it so much that Netflix partnered with JTBC for the production of a second season that aired in 2017!

Memories of the Alhambra (2019)

My most recent obsession! This drama ended on January 20th so it really is quite recent. It starred Park Shin Hye and Hyun Bin and gathered some of the highest ratings ever. They filmed both in Korea, as well as in Spain and Granada. Therefore, they also got a bit of backlash for product placements. However, the storyline worked them in so it didn’t seem quite as bad.

The storyline is about a new AR (Augmented Reality) game that one can play wearing special contact lenses (Warcross anyone? Yeah, I know! That’s partly why I loved it!). Obviously, stuff happens within the game as well as outside of it. This drama has everything, romance, combat, technology, corporate drama, all of it!

It was aired simultaneously on TvN and Netflix, so people are already signing petitions for a season 2, hoping that Netflix will be all over it. They should because it was an amazing drama and a lot more material could easily come from this universe.

Not to mention, the romance was adorable and squeal-inducing!

So now that I’ve got you interested, how do you go about watching those shows?

Well, you have a few options:

  • Netflix: They are coming up with more and more every month, they recently solo produced the horror drama ”Kingdom” which I have yet to watch.
  • VIKI: You can watch most Kdramas on there for free with ads. You can also get a premium pass to watch exclusive content and everything without ads.
  • OnDemandKorea: They have the best selection, however, not all titles have subtitles, which is a problem for me. What they do have with subtitles though is great, and they have a great selection of variety shows as well.

So there you go, now go forth and binge-watch! And if you happen to know of any great dramas or TV Shows, let me know in the comments! I’m always looking for new things to watch!

Until next week,

Andreanne
